Child Development Internship and Completer Program

A course completer program (which can substitute for foreign language credit toward a high school diploma) is available within the FACS Child Development content area.

This program articulates with Montgomery College and can earn up to NINE college credits toward a degree in Early Childhood Education.

Other benefits include:

  * Totally HANDS ON course work
  * Completer program substitutes for foreign language credit, necessary for graduation.
  * Preferential PARKING SPACE and a pass to leave campus early WITH the car. (application required).
  * Certificate of Merit course status
  * Higher wage earning potential in full or part time child care work.
  * Professional work experience for your resume.
  * Amazing rise in the sense of personal self esteem.
  * KNOWING you make a HUGE difference in the lives of at least 25 elementary school children, and their classroom teacher.
  * Access to an awesome amount of teaching resources, suitable for many age groups.

Students may enroll in the internship program without taking advantage of the completer option.

The internship extends learning from Child Development to different ages, levels, and types of children. Students work under teacher supervision with children and adults one or more periods a day at a field site. Placement opportunities include early childhood, elementary, and special education programs as well as day care centers. Career skills and professionalism are enhanced through creative projects with children in a work site relating to child development careers. Students meet with the Child Development teacher at the high school site weekly for professional seminar activities.  Students must provide their own transportation to the field site.

What Do I Need To Do?

To be eligible for the completer program, a student must complete three credits of Child Development in addition to the completion of Child Development 1A and 1B.  This can be accomplished in two ways:

  1. Complete Child Development 2A and 2B (1 credit),  and Child Development Internship A and B (a double period internship in an elementary school). The double period internship always occurs during sixth and seventh periods of the school day.

  2. Complete the Child Development Internship A and B (2 periods of internship) and Child Development 3A and B (an additional single period of internship). Child Development 3A and 3B may be served in the elementary school, or, with the permission of the instructor,  in the Child Development Preschool as a high school student teacher ("Cougars in the Classroom").  The additional period of internship always occurs during the fifth period of the school day.

All potential Child Development Interns should see Mrs. Mangene for more information and a program application.
