Photography 1-4
Photography I A - 1/2 credit
Students learn how to use a camera, process the film, and print black-and-white photographs. Aesthetics are considered in composition exercises and serve as a topic in viewing films and in class discussions. Several theme projects are assigned through which students demonstrate their sensitivity to subject matter, lighting, form, and composition. Contemporary photographic technology is demonstrated and used where available. Safe darkroom practices are learned, and opportunities to exhibit work are presented. Related health hazards are studied.
Photography I B - 1/2 credit
Prerequisite: Attainment of the outcomes of Photography A
A variety of subjects, including still life, portrait, landscape, and architecture will be incorporated in montage, multiple image, and photo essay assignments. The chemistry of photography and the operation of a darkroom are discussed with reference to health, safety, and economics. Work done with digital camera and computers will be discussed and critiqued. An overview of the history of photography and discussions on the works of known photographers are conducted. Students mat or mount some work for display. Slide essays, photo- silkscreens,animated films, photo CDS, and videotape may be selected as project options. Health hazards are reviewed.
Photography 2A - 1/2 credit
Prerequisite: Attainment of the outcomes of Photography 1B
Students create, produce, and develop a body of work using a variety of aesthetic concepts. Advanced camera and darkroom techniques and digital camera technology are demonstrated and discussed. Studies continue in the history of photography, photographers, and technical developments. Composition and aesthetic criteria are stressed. Students mat and display their work for exhibit. Career opportunities open to individuals who study photography are represented throughout the course.
Photography 2B - 1/2 credit - Grades 10-1 2
Prerequisite: Attainment of outcomes of Photography 2A
Students develop a portfolio of work with the option of using a unifying concept or theme. They investigate a variety of techniques and relate them to expression- Study of the history of photography continues and may emphasize the achievements of one period or photographer. Studies using digital camera technology continue. The opportunity to apply aesthetic criteria to a variety of photographic exhibits is presented. Optional projects related to contemporary technique may be presented. Photographs will be discussed in terms of the photographer's intent and interpretation as well as technica skill and aesthetics.
Photo 3 and 4 include further advanced studies of the medium, with a development of a personal photo portfolio.
