Department Vision

At Quince Orchard Art is treated as an essential part of the student's quality education which fulfills a fundamental role in their development. Teachers focus on art as a powerful mode of communication that provides ways to discover, interpret, and make meaning of life experiences. They work together to plan lessons that emphasize the power of art throughout students' lives. Through the use of team planned lessons and consistent use of rubrics and journals, teachers work together to share this vision with the students. In doing so, lessons are also aligned with Maryland State Content Standards for Art:

  • Standard I: Perceiving and Responding ~ Aesthetic Education: The student will demonstrate the ability to perceive, interpret, and respond to ideas, experiences, and the environment through visual art.
  • Standard II: Historical, Cultural, and Social Context: The student will demonstrate an understanding of visual art as a basic aspect of history and human experience.
  • Standard III: Creative Expression and Production: The student will demonstrate the ability to organize knowledge an ideas for expression in the production of art.
  • Standard IV: Aesthetics and Criticism: The student will demonstrate the ability to identify, analyze, and apply criteria for making visual aesthetic judgments.

Amidst all the recent MCPS changes and initiatives, our Art department is proud to note that we have embraced these changes, and worked hard to implement, evaluate and revise our policies and procedures in order to best meet the needs of our students.

Teaching Staff

Team approach and wide range of skills strengthen department.

We are especially proud of the way our Art team works together for student success. Teachers meet weekly to coordinate plans, share successes and support one another. The results of the structured planning have spoken volumes, both in teacher motivation and quality of work from the students. The department is unified in it's approach within individual classes with regards to policies, procedures, grading practices and expectations. This has resulted in clarity and successes for our students.

In addition to the wonderful team work in the department, we also celebrate the wide range of art skills in our teachers. Because of the variety of specialty areas, art students at QO can take advantage of a well rounded art education, that goes from traditional drawing....to digital art....to the stained glass windows in advanced sculpture and ceramics. It is common to see students spending 4 full years in art classes experiencing the variety offered within the department.
